LIGHTING STARTS WITH THE BOARD
Different lights. Different board priorities.
Board shape is only the starting point. LED spacing, mounting, current and temperature determine what the construction needs to do.
Round boards & LED arrays
Coordinate the LED layout, mounting holes, connector position and contact to the heatsink. Concentrated arrays need particular attention to the heat path beneath the LEDs.
Linear lighting boards
Check repeated LED pitch, current distribution, long-board flatness and breakaway features. The board needs to fit the fixture and remain practical to assemble.
UV & compact modules
Start with the LED package, operating conditions and local heat density. Select the board construction around electrical isolation, thermal transfer and the available mounting area.
MATERIAL SELECTION
Choose the construction for the complete project.
LED PCB describes the application. The right substrate depends on the thermal load, routing, insulation, mounting and overall build cost.

THERMAL DESIGN
Give heat a clear way out.
The metal base is one part of the thermal system. Heat must move from the LED package through the solder joint, copper pad and dielectric, then into the base, thermal interface and heatsink.
Start with the operating conditions.
Provide the LED package, drive current, heat-source layout, ambient temperature and available cooling surface. These inputs make the material and mounting decision meaningful.
Review the interfaces.
Dielectric thickness, pad geometry, solder contact, board flatness and the heatsink interface all influence the final temperature. Increasing base-metal conductivity alone does not remove a bottleneck elsewhere.
Copper → Dielectric → Metal base
The dielectric transfers heat while isolating the circuit from the metal base. The mounting interface carries that heat into the cooling structure.

CAM engineering · Manufacturing data review
ENGINEERING BEFORE PRODUCTION
Resolve the details before they become rework.
The manufacturing review connects the electrical design to the actual board, tooling and assembly process.
01
Pads, copper & isolation
Check LED footprints, thermal pads, polarity, current paths, spacing and separation from the metal base.
02
Outline, holes & mounting
Review hole and slot locations, edge features, contact surfaces and the flatness needed for the fixture.
03
Panelization & assembly access
Set the panel layout, breakaway method, process rails and access around components and connectors.
BARE BOARD TO LED PCBA
Define the build. Keep the handoffs clear.
Choose bare-board fabrication, or combine PCB manufacturing with LED component sourcing and SMT assembly.
01
PCB fabrication
Release the Gerber or ODB++ data, drill files, drawing, stackup, copper, solder mask and finish. Include mounting and insulation requirements in the fabrication package.
02
LED component sourcing
Use the BOM to specify manufacturer part numbers, package, flux and color bins, driver parts and connectors. Record the component requirements that affect the finished light.
03
SMT assembly
Provide the placement data, assembly drawing and polarity. Review the solder-paste and reflow requirements with the board thermal mass and LED package in mind.
The LED specification belongs in the BOM.
LED part number and bin requirements guide component sourcing. Luminous flux, CCT, CRI and operating current define the lighting result to measure. A 2700–6500 K CCT target or a Ra ≥80 design target belongs to the product specification.
INSPECTION & VALIDATION
Measure the board. Then measure the light.
Electrical connectivity, solder quality, optical output and operating temperature answer different questions. Define each acceptance criterion for the deliverable you need.
Automated optical inspection
Circuit, assembly and application checks.
Bare-board electrical and dimensional checks verify the circuit and physical build. AOI and assembly inspection address visible production defects. Powered tests and optical measurements evaluate the assembled lighting board.
Temperature measurements follow the LED case, solder point, board and heatsink so the thermal path can be assessed under operating conditions.

PROJECT QUESTIONS
A few things to settle before the build.
Practical answers for material selection, LED specifications, files and quotation.
When should I use an aluminum LED PCB?
An aluminum PCB is a useful starting point when the LED circuit needs a short heat path into a heatsink or fixture housing. Select the dielectric, copper, board geometry and mounting together. FR-4 can remain suitable for lower thermal loads or designs with a well-defined copper and thermal-via path.
Is copper always better than aluminum for LED boards?
Copper can spread concentrated heat effectively, but it adds weight and material cost. The dielectric and mounting interface can still limit the result. Compare the complete thermal path and the temperature requirement before changing the base metal.
What is the difference between an LED PCB and LED PCB assembly?
The bare LED PCB contains the circuit, substrate, solder mask and surface finish. LED PCB assembly adds the specified LEDs, drivers and other components through sourcing and placement, followed by inspection and the defined lighting tests.
Which files are needed for an LED PCB quote?
For bare boards, send Gerber or ODB++ data, drill files, a fabrication drawing, quantity, material and finish requirements. For assembly, add the BOM with manufacturer part numbers, placement data, assembly drawing, LED polarity and bin requirements, and the test specification.
How should I specify LED color and brightness?
Include the exact LED manufacturer part number and the required flux, CCT and voltage bins in the BOM. Define the target luminous flux, CCT, CRI and operating current for the assembled board so the optical measurements can be judged against the product specification.
What affects LED PCB cost and production timing?
Material grade, dielectric system, copper thickness, board outline, panel utilization, quantity, LED availability and the test program all influence the build. Release the BOM, construction and acceptance criteria together so the quotation covers the required deliverable.
